“We’ve had enough resolutions, we need results.” - Nakia, Musician/President, Austin Texas Musicians
WHO: Austin musicians, music industry workers, venue owners/operators and fans WHAT: “Come and Save It” Rally at City Hall WHEN: Monday, September 28, 11am WHERE: Austin City Hall
BACKGROUND: Many of Austin’s beloved music venues have closed, while others are in danger of disappearing for good if immediate aid is not delivered by our City Council. These businesses are not only vital to the economy and culture of our city but they also employ thousands of it’s musicians, hospitality, and production staff. A June 2020 Hobby School of Public Affairs report outlined that music venues exhibited the greatest need for pandemic aid in Austin. And yet, after empty promises from Council to deliver aid to venues, a recent round of small business (CLEAR) grants, administered by the Better Business Bureau, proved to be ineffective in doing so.
ACTION: We urge council to: Create a dedicated Music Venue Preservation Fund ($10M) to save Austin music venues. Select a qualified grant administrator that understands our community, and has prior grant administration experience, to administer funds with complete transparency.
We invite musicians, music industry workers, venue operators and music fans to join us in this safe outdoor rally (masks required). Stakeholders from Austin’s music community will speak in support of Item 62 (SAVES Resolution), passed on consent during the September 17 City Council meeting.
Speakers currently include: Nakia Reynoso, President, Austin Texas Musicians Jeannette Gregor, Amplified Sound Coalition Pat Buchta, Executive Director, Austin Texas Musicians Lauryn Gould, Musician/ATXM Musicians Advisory Panel Dave Madden, Musician/ATXM Musicians Advisory Panel Kevin Russell, Musician/ATXM Musicians Advisory Panel
